To evaluate the potential of spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) using en-face module for the imaging of the corneoscleral limbus.
Hundred and fifty-two eyes of 76 subjects were included in this study. Eighty-two eyes of 41 healthy subjects and 70 eyes of 35 patients with ocular surface disease were investigated. All subjects underwent detailed ophthalmic examination and were then evaluated using were examined with the Avanti RTVue® anterior segment OCT. The corneoscleral limbus in four quadrants (superior, inferior, temporal and nasal) was assessed using en-face OCT mode. Images were semi-quantitatively analyzed according to whether or not palisades of Vogt (POV) were visible. Eventually, en-face OCT features were compared to in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) in 11 eyes of 7 healthy and diseased patients.
En-face SD-OCT showed POV as a network of radially oriented, channel-like and high reflective features located in the superficial corneoscleral limbus. These features were comparable to those observed in IVCM. En-face SD-OCT provided an easy and reproducible identification of POV without any direct contact or any special preparation, with a grading scale from 0 (no visualization) to 3 (high visualization). The POV were found predominantly in inferior (P<0.001) and superior (P<0.001) quadrants in comparison with the temporal and nasal quadrants for all subjects examined. The visibility score decreased with age (P<0.001) and was lower in patients with ocular surface disease (P<0.01).
En-face SD-OCT is an interesting technique that allows a noninvasive evaluation of the POV in a way comparable to IVCM. It provides valuable information the limbal anatomy and could be useful in the assessment of ocular conditions affecting the corneoscleral limbus.
