To determine the prevalence of color vision deficiency (CVD) in Chinese 6-year-old children.
The current study is a population-based evaluation of the prevalence of CVD in 6-year-old children in Fengfeng City, a small-size city of North China. In this study, all 6-year-old children (born from Jan 1st, 2010 to Dec 31st, 2010) in Fengfeng City were recruited and completed color vision testing using the Ishihara color plates. Prevalence of CVD in these Chinese 6-year-old children was stratified and analyzed by age, sex, and ethnicity.
Twenty-one of 1627 6-year-old children (1.3%) didn't pass the color vision testing, including 11 mild subjects, 6 moderate subjects, and 4 severe subjects. The prevalence of CVD was 1.1% for boys, and 1.5% for girls.
Present study shows different prevalence rate of Chinese Children in CVD as compared to other reported rates of other ethnicity. Further studies with larger sample size and age spans are required.
