There are different kinds of donor cornea preservation media. There are still some controversies in which preservation media has a better capacity of preservation. The purpose of this study is to compare the quality of donor cornea preserved in two different media: Eusol-C® and Optisol-GS®.
A cross-sectional study was performed using patient records of 1062 donor corneas from our local Eye Bank (Santa Casa de Misericordia de São Paulo, Brazil) from 2013 to 2016. Epithelial exposure, epithelial defect, Descemet folds, stromal striae, and stromal edema were scored by an experienced ophthalmologist using slit lamp. These quality measurements were scored as: 0 - excellent; 1- good; 2- regular; 3- bad; 4- unacceptable. Endothelial cell density was measured using eye bank specular microscope (EB-10, Konan, Japan). Data from optical and tectonic graft preserved in Eusol-C® and Optisol-GS® were compared using non-parametric Mann-Whitney test.
Among the 1062 corneas evaluated in the study, 75.9% were preserved with Optisol and 24.1% with Eusol. For optical grafts, we could observe statistical significance in Descemet fold, stromal striae and edema. For tectonic grafts, we could observe statistical significance in epithelial defect, Descemet fold, and stromal and edema. No statistical significance was observed for endothelial density in both groups in neither preservation media (Figure 1).
Donor Corneas preserved with Optisol showed better quality compared to the ones preserved with Eusol.
