Abstract

Purpose : A new test pattern has been developed for the HFA3 perimeter (ZEISS, Dublin, CA). For some patients, studies have shown that visual field damage may be detected within the central 10 degrees before the damage is apparent in a 24-2 pattern. The SITA Faster 24-2C test includes 10 points from the SITA 10-2 pattern tested at the end of the SITA Faster 24-2 threshold test. The purpose of this study was to evaluate this new test in comparison to the SITA Fast 24-2 test and the comparable points of the SITA Fast 10-2 test.

Methods : Normal and glaucoma subjects were tested on an HFA3 perimeter. Each subject took the new SITA Faster 24-2C test, a SITA Fast 24-2 and SITA Fast 10-2 test on one eye at each of two visits. The test order was randomized between visits. The number of total deviation (TD) and pattern deviation (PD) points flagged in each test were totaled and compared.

Results : Twenty-five normal (mean age: 54.7 years, SD 9.3, range 27-69) and twenty five glaucoma (mean age: 67.8 years, SD 9.3, range 52-83) subjects were enrolled. For the normal group, the number of flagged TD and PD points in the central 10 degrees between the 24-2 (12 points) and the 24-2C (22 points) showed no statistical difference. For the glaucoma group, the 24-2C test flagged an average of 2.8 more TD points (SD 2.8), 1.9 more PD points (3.0) and was statistically significant (Table 1). Comparison of the ten central SITA Faster 24-2C points to the matching SITA Fast 10-2 points showed no statistically significant differences. For the normal group, the TD difference was 0.2 (0.7) points, the PD difference 0.1 (1.1) points while the glaucoma TD difference was 0.3 points (1.8) and PD difference 0.3 (1.5) points (Table 2).

Conclusions : The SITA Faster 24-2C test pattern showed an enhanced sensitivity to detect visual field loss in the central 10 degrees over the SITA Fast 24-2 pattern. The increased total and pattern deviation flagging of the 10 additional SITA Faster 24-2C points corresponded to the flagging of the same points tested on the SITA Fast 10-2 test. The SITA Faster 24-2C test may offer earlier detection of central visual field loss without the need to run a supplementary 10-2 test for some patients.
