Abstract
Purpose :
to study sectorial endothelial deterioration imaging using severity scoring system for Fuchs’ endothelial dystrophy (FED) to confirm previous studies that shows that exposed areas of the cornea can show worse endothelial patterns.
Methods :
A cross-sectional study involving 98 eyes of 49 patients with the clinical diagnosis of Fuchs’ endothelial dystrophy (FED) was performed at the Clinica de Olhos Dr. Fernando Abib (Curitiba, Brazil) and at Santa Casa de Misericordia de Sao Paulo (Sao Paulo, Brazil). Contact Corneal Specular Microscope (CSMe) (BioOptics, USA) was used to score the severity of FED based on CSMe endothelial profile (Figure 1). The following areas of the cornea were analyzed and scored by two different and independent examiners: Central (C), Superior (S), Superior Mid-Periphery (SMP), Inferior (I), Nasal (N), and Temporal (T). Results were expressed in average and standard deviation. Each area was compared to each other using Mann-Whitney test with level of significance of 0.05.
Results :
Central area scored 4.76 ± 2.08 and was statistically significant comparing to other areas (p<0.05). Temporal area scored 2.45 ± 2.06 and inferior area scored 1.90 ± 1.87 (p<0.05). Nasal area showed score of 1.82 ± 1.94 and superior area as 0.73 ± 1.32 (p<0.05)
Conclusions :
in FED, most severe areas were the central and temporal areas of the cornea. Most preserved corneal area in FED was superior area of the cornea.
