Abstract

Presentation Description : One way to describe big data is data that does not fit on an excel spreadsheet. In vision research, there are many potential uses and applications of big data in research, patient care, and health policy. There is, however, a tension between individual privacy and the new knowledge that can be gained from big data. Examples of the impacts of big data and the ethical tensions in its use will be given to help participants understand the implications of working, using, and contributing to big data in their research.

This abstract was presented at the 2019 ARVO Annual Meeting, held in Vancouver, Canada, April 28 - May 2, 2019.
