Abstract
Purpose :
To assess the prevalence and associated factors of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in a Russian population.
Methods :
The Ural Eye and Medical Study (UEMS) is a population-based study performed in the city of Ufa/Russia and in villages in a distance of 65 km from Ufa. The inclusion criterion was an age of 40+ years. AMD was diagnosed on fundus photographs and on spectral-domain optical coherence tomograms.
Results :
Out of a population of 7328 eligible individuals, 5899 individuals (2580 (43.7%) men) (participation rate:80.5%) participated (mean age:59.0±10.7 years (range:40-94 years)). Assessable fundus photographs were available for 4932 (83.6%) particpants with a mean age of 58.5±10.5 years (range:40.94 years). AMD was detected in 550/4932 individuals or 11.2% (95% confidence interval (CI): 10.3,12.0)., with a prevalence of early, intermediate and late AMD of 8.2% (95%CI:7.4,9.0), 2.4% (95%CI:2.0,2.9), and 0.8% (95%CI:0.5, 1.0), respectively. A higher AMD prevalence was associated with older age (P<0.001; odds ratio (OR): 1.08;95%CI:1.07,1.09), rural region of habitation (P<0.001;OR:1.87;95%CI:1.52,2.29), shorter axial length (P=0.003;OR:0.87;95%CI:0.79, 0.96), and lower prevalence of diabetes mellitus (P=0.001;OR:0.58;95%CI:0.42,0.81). In that model, the AMD prevalence was not significantly associated with gender (P=0.94), or diastolic (P=0.96) or systolic (P=0.98) blood pressure.
Conclusions :
In this typical, ethnically mixed, urban and rural Russian population aged 40+ years, the AMD prevalence was 11.2% (95%CI: 10.3,12.0) with the main associated factors of older age, rural region of habitation, shorter axial length and lower prevalence of diabetes mellitus.
