Abstract

Purpose : Ultrawide-field optical coherence tomography (UW-OCT) allows to reveal 3-dimensional structure of peripheral regions. In the current study, we studied the morphological differences at the posterior segment between central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) and healthy eyes.

Methods : 10 eyes of 9 patients (7 men 2 women average 53.8 years) with CSC and 20 eyes of 10 healthy subjects (10 men average 36.6 years) were examined by a prototype UW-OCT (up to 105 degree and 10.9 mm depth) with swept source system (Topcon, Tokyo, Japan). The morphological change of posterior segment was displayed by sector scan technique based on equidistant projection from the pivot point. The choroidal thickness was measured at the each sector using the conventional automated layer analysis method. The local morphological change was evaluated by the maximum steepness (µm/deg) of differentiating the choroidal thickness profile to reveal the difference of the choroidal forming. Vertical scan was evaluated to avoid the influence of optic disc.

Results : The choroid became thicker from the peripheral regions toward the macular area in both of healthy and CSC eyes. The mean maximum steepness of differentiating the choroidal thickness profile was 18.21 ± 4.07 um/deg in CSC eyes, which was significantly higher than 15.15 ± 4.87 µm/deg in healthy eyes (P<0.03).

Conclusions : Choroid in CSC eyes showed the steep protrusion around the posterior pole. UW-OCT can evaluate the abnormality of choroidal structures around posterior segment in CSC.
