Abstract

Purpose : To describe the prevalence of focal hypo-fluorescent areas (FHFA) on late-phase indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) in fellow eyes of symptomatic central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) and evaluate their possible association with the development of serous retinal detachment (SRD).

Methods : Consecutive unilateral symptomatic CSC patients were retrospectively analyzed. Inclusion criteria included the availability of a late phase ICGA (over 25 min) and a Spectral Domain OCT macular cube (Spectralis, Heidelberg Engineering, Germany) for both eyes at baseline and over three months. Subsequent fundus imaging of fellow eyes was reviewed for the development of SRD.

Results : Unilateral forty-five symptomatic CSC patients were analyzed with a median follow-up duration of 15 months (range, 3-62). All forty-five patients had FHFA at baseline in symptomatic CSC eye on late-phase ICGA. In the fellow eye, 30 (66.7%) patients had FHFA at baseline. During the follow-up, 10 out of 30 patients with FHFA developed an SRD, while no patient with normal ICGA developed SRD (p=0.01, Log-rank test).

Conclusions : FHFA on late-phase ICGA are present in all symptomatic CSC eyes and over two-thirds of fellow eyes of symptomatic CSC, and their presence may constitute a risk factor for SRD.
