To assess post-treatment change of choroidal structural parameters and their correlations and fluctuations in Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease (VKH).
We retrospectively reviewed 20 consecutive cases with acute VKH who were treated at Kobe University Hospital during 2012-2017, followed up for at least 12 months, and evaluated by enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT). Choroidal structural parameters used were subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT), choroidal intensity (CI), and choroidal stroma/lumen ratio (CSLR). Post-treatment change of each parameters was examined at 2 weeks, 1 month, and 12 months, correlation analyses between parameters were performed at each time point, and coefficient of variation (CV) of each parameter during 3 months period in the remission phase was calculated.
The mean (± standard deviation) SFCT, CI, and CSLR values were 806±224 µm, 0.40±0.18, 0.10±0.06 before treatment, 307±120 µm, 0.60±0.21, 0.22±0.07 at 2 weeks, 323±176 µm, 0.51±0.13, 0.21±0.06 at 1 month, and 264±79, 0.51±0.13, 0.18±0.06 µm at 12 months, respectively. In comparison to pre-treatment values, all parameters showed a significant change at each post-treatment time point (P<0.001, mixed effect model). Correlation coefficient between CI and CSLR was 0.43 before treatment (P=0.07), 0.46 at 2 weeks (P=0.04), 0.20 at 1month (P=0.31) and 0.19 at 12 months (P=0.46). No significant correlation was found between SFCT and CI or between SFCT and CSLR at each time point. Regarding fluctuation, the mean CV of each parameter was low (SFCT [0.12±0.08], CI [0.20±0.1], and CSLR [0.17±0.10]) and there was no significant difference among them (P=0.31).
SFCT, CI and CSLR could be predictors that independently and steadily evaluate choroidal structure and would reflect post-treatment choroidal changes in VKH eyes.
