Abstract
Purpose :
To report the values of the Nerve Fiber Layer (NFL) thickness from a Latin healthy population, obtained using Spectralis (Heidelberg Engineering Vista, California, U) and Optovue (Optovue, Inc. RTVue) OCT devices. To report the Optic Nerve (ON) area and the Cup/Disc Ratio (C/D R) from the same population, measured with the Optovue. To determine if there is a statistically significant difference between the measurements reported in this study, and the normal values reported by the normative database for each device
Methods :
A cross-sectional and correlation study was carried out including 290 eyes(145 subjects), 69% females. NFL Thickness was measured with both technologies by sectors. The ON area and the vertical C/D R was measured with Optovue. Data analysis was performed with SPSS 21.0, to estimate standardized mean difference according to variance (t-student test) and Spearman correlation test
Results :
The NFL thickness, analyzed with Optovue showed a statistically significant difference in the nasal (4.2 um) and temporal (4.9 um) sectors, being thinner in the studied population compared to the normative database from the device. A statistically significant difference in the Temporal Superior sector(6.04 um) and the nasal inferior sector(4.1 um), was found, being thicker in the studied population. The Spectralis normative database was thinner in all the sectors, compared with the values of the healthy population studied, showing statistically significant difference (p=0.00). Average of the ON area was 2.06 mm2 in our population, compared to 2.11mm2 from the of the Optovue normative database (p=0.05). A statistically significant difference was found between the vertical C/D R from our healthy population (0.44) and the average from the Optovue normative database (0.18) (p=0.00)
Conclusions :
We have reported normal cut off values of NFL thickness, ON area and C/D Ratio in healthy Latin subjects evaluated with Spectralis and Optovue technologies, as new parameters for clinical and research activities. NFL thickness was thicker in the Latin population studied compared to the normative database of the Spectralis device. The vertical C/D R was larger in the healthy Latin subjects, compared to the normative database of the Optovue device. Up to our knowledge, this would be the first normative database for these devices including Latin American population only
