Abstract

Purpose : To evaluate the corneal curvature before and after primary pterygium surgery using Placido-Disc-Based Keratoscopy and Scheimpflug Imaging Tomography.

Methods : A prospective longitudinal study was performed. The patients were evaluated according to age, gender, history of sun exposure, visual acuity, preoperative extension of the pterygium on the cornea (grade 1, 2, 3 and 4), and values of K1 and K2, astigmatism, and visual axis using Placido-Disc-Based Keratoscoy (PDBK) and Scheimpflug Imaging Tomography (SIT) analysis at pre and 30 and 90 postoperative days. All surgeries were performed using the same technique by the author. The data was submitted to statistical analysis.

Results : 44 patients were evaluated. 66% were female and 34% were male. The mean age was 49 years old. Sun exposure history was reported by 73% and the most frequent complaints were burning eyes (43%) and foreign body sensation (39%). An average decrease of 4.60 at initial and 30 postoperative astigmatism at SIT and 2.27 at PDBK (p<0,001), and a K1 decrease of 4,52 at SIT and 2,27 at PDBK (p<0,001) were observed and both statistically significant. The K2 decrease of 0,08 at SIT and 0,26 at PDBK (p>0,05), and the flatter axis decrease of 4,04 at initial and 30 postoperative SIT and 0,89 at PDBK (p>0,05) which results were not statistically significant, but with statistical accordance between both exams by Wilcoxon Test and also with statistical accordance between both exams were also demonstrated.

Conclusions : This study demonstrated a significant decrease of corneal anterior astigmatism and values of K1 at initial and 30 postoperative PDBK and SIT, and an accordance between both exams to evaluate the parameters.
