Abstract
Purpose :
Squamous cell carcinoma in the most common ocular surface neoplasia. Its diagnosis is clinical, supports by histology and optical coherence tomography. Treatment may be surgical or medical, alone or in combination. Among the drugs used for chemotherapy is the 5-fluorouracil.
Methods :
Material and methods: patients with clinical diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma were studied by optical coherence tomography to evaluate response to topical treatment with 5- fluorouracil.
Results :
Results: a total of 18 patients were studied, obtaining total resolution of the neoplasia in nine of them; one remains in treatment. Even though tomographic characteristics were heterogeneous, there was a positive response in all patients, so there is no tomographic pattern that limits response to 5- fluorouracil. Side effects were mild to moderate.
Conclusions :
Conclusions: topical treatment with 5- fluorouracil 2.5% is safe and effective for the treatment of squamous cell carcinoma of ocular surface. Optical coherence tomography is a useful tool for diagnosis and surveillance of this pathology. There is no tomographic pattern that limits the effect of 5- fluorouracil.
