Abstract

Presentation Description : Retinal hemorrhage is an important sign of trauma in young children. However, there are many potential cause of retinal hemorrhage that need to be considered. Fortunately, the specific pattern of hemorrhage guides the diagnostic process and often allows the differential diagnosis to be narrowed down considerably. This talk will review these retinal hemorrhage patterns and review clinical research in this area, discussing both what has been established and what needs to be investigated further. Study of these RH patterns provide clues as to the potential mechanisms that likely are invovled in the development of traumatic retinal hemorrhage in young children, and provide clues as to the relation between traumatic forces and specific retinal findings. Again, discussion will be focused not only on what we can deduce from these patterns but also what might be the next directions in this field of inquiry.

This abstract was presented at the 2019 ARVO Annual Meeting, held in Vancouver, Canada, April 28 - May 2, 2019.
