Abstract

Purpose : To determine the prevalence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in an adult Hong Kong population, the Hong Kong Eye Survey.

Methods : The Hong Kong Eye Survey was a population-based, cross-sectional study conducted in family cohorts living in Hong Kong. 873 families and 2022 adult local residents were recruited in the study between 2016-2017. 1562 participants age 40 years and older were included in the evaluation of drusen and pigmentation abnormalities using a modified Wisconsin Age-Related Maculopathy Grading System. After proper dilatation of the pupils, participants were given wide angel fundus photography, and optical coherence tomography (OCT) was utilised additionally to increase the accuracy of grading.

Results : Fundus photos from 2690 eyes of 1392 participants who have at least one eye eligible for analysis, 10.92% of pictures were not eligible due to insufficient quality and diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, myopic degeneration and laser scar. The mean age of the participants was 59.02 years. Prevalence of early AMD increased from 0.17% to 7.51% in the age group of 40-49 years old comparing with 70 years or older age group; retinal pigment abnormalities from 0.35% to 8.92%, large drusen >=125um) from 1.21% to 14.08%, soft drusen from 0.52% to 23.47%. GA was presented in 3 eyes (0.11%) and exudative AMD was presented in 5 eyes (0.19%), the prevalence of late AMD was 0.30%.

Conclusions : In this Hong Kong population, we found the prevalence of early AMD, late AMD, and soft drusen were relatively higher than the Chinese population in Beijing and Handan based on the previous study conducted in mainland China. However, comparable prevalence were observed compared with the participants living in the urban area of Taiwan of the Shihpai Eye Study and Singapore-Chinese of the Singapore Epidemiology of Eye Disease Study.
