Abstract
Presentation Description :
Since the lens is an avascular tissue, it relies on the ocular fluids to provide nutrients, amino acids and antioxidants for normal lens function. Previous research has identified uptake pathways to accumulate antioxidant and antioxidant metabolites from the aqueous humor into the lens. More recent evidence indicates that the lens is able to uptake antioxidants such as glutathione from the vitreous humor. Work from our laboratory demonstrates that the lens is able to export antioxidants into the vitreous humor, indicating a dynamic interplay between the lens and vitreous humor to maintain antioxidant homeostasis in the eye. Removal of the lens or vitrectomy may result in disruptions in antioxidant balance in the eye, which over time, may contribute to oxidative stress related diseases of other tissues of the eye.
