Abstract

Purpose : To evaluate the epidemiological aspects of patients evaluated at the Emergency Unit of Hospital de Olhos de Londrina (Londrina Eye Hospital), Brazil, during 2017.

Methods : A retrospective, cross-sectional study was performed evaluating the medical records of patients attended at the Emergency Unit of Londrina Eye Hospital during 2017 according to age, gender, clinical evaluation, visual acuity, , The data was submitted to statistical analysis.

Results :
1770 medical records were evaluated. 63% were male and 37% female. 76% were 18-65 years old and 7 days is the average time 88% of patients wait to search for medical attendance. Foreign body sensation is the most common complaint observed (28%). It was the most important cause of complaint among males (39%), while Itching and ocular discharge was the most common complaint observed among females (37%) (p<0,001). Visual acuity was better than 20/30 in most of patients (70%) who complained of symptoms for less than 7 days and less than 20/200 for those with symptoms for more than 30 days (p<0,001). Visual acuity was worse among patients who complained of loss of vision, 36% presented with visual acuity less than 20/400. (p < 0,001).

Conclusions : The main complaint observed in the Emergency unit was foreign body sensation in males and itching and ocular discharge in females. The average period of time between the first symptoms and the medical attendance was 7 days, and the more time the symptoms were present, more deficit of vision was observed.
