Abstract
Purpose :
To evaluate the morphology of iridocorneal angle and anterior segment structure of eyes in children with cataract, and to explore potential preoperative structural clues for postoperative glaucoma.
Methods :
Setting: A tertiary referral center in Southeast China
Study Population: We examined children with cataract before surgery.
Observation Procedure: The iridocorneal angle was evaluated using gonioscopy. We compared the angular structures between eyes with cataract and fellow eyes.
Main Outcomes: The structures of iridocorneal angle and biometric parameters.
Results :
We recruited 55 eyes of 55 children with bilateral cataract and 41 cataractous eyes and 33 fellow eyes of 41 children with unilateral cataract. The iridocorneal angle was open in eyes with pediatric cataract, when compared to fellow eyes. The eyes with pediatric cataract exhibited more pigments on trabecular meshwork than those fellow eyes (P = .013 and .002, unilateral cataract vs. fellow and bilateral cataract vs. fellow, respectively). The eyes with pediatric cataract exhibited smaller cornea than fellow eyes (P = .031 and <.001, unilateral cataract vs. fellow and bilateral cataract vs. fellow, respectively).
Conclusions :
The iridocorneal angle is open in eyes of children with cataract. The increased pigments on the trabecular meshwork should be carefully monitored, and pigment deposition raises the alarm of developing postoperative glaucoma.
