Abstract
Purpose :
To evaluate the effect of preservative free diquafosol in patients with dry eye syndrome after phacoemulsification, comparing with preservative containing diquafosol and preservative free hyaluronic acid.
Methods :
A hundred fifty eyes of 150 patients with dry eye syndrome and cataract were enrolled in this study. The participants were divided into 3 groups (preservative free diquafosol group, preservative containing diquafosol group, and preservative free hyaluronate group) and used each medication after cataract surgery. Tear breakup time (TBUT), Schirmer test, staining score, Ocular Surface Disease index (OSDI), meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) parameters, and corneal higher order aberration (HOA) were measured preoperatively and at 1, and 3 months after surgery.
Results :
The TBUT, oxford score, OSDI, lid margin abnormality, and meibum quality have improved with time in preservative free diquafosol group. TBUT, MGD grade and MG expression were significantly better in both diquafosol using groups compared to hyaluronate group. OSDI, lid margin, and meibum quality were significantly better in preservative free diquafosol group. Corneal HOAs improved in all groups and there was no significant difference between the groups.
Conclusions :
Preservative free diquafosol showed efficient and safe outcomes in treatment of dry eye syndrome after cataract surgery and resulted better outcomes than preservative containing diquafosol and preservative free hyaluronate.
