Abstract

Purpose :
To investigate the morphological changes of peripapillary tissues in myopic eye with Swept-Source Optical Coherence Tomography (SS-OCT), to explore their associated factors and their effects on visual acuity.

Methods :
This is a cross-section study. Two hundred and forty-three eyes in 129 patients with axial length more than 24mm were evaluated by SS-OCT. Morphological changes in macular and parapapillary regions on OCT were assessed. The included eyes were divided into 4 groups, including normal group, macular abnormal group, peripapillary abnormal group and both macular and peripapillary abnormal group. Axial length, spherical equivalence, visual acuity and choroidal thickness were compared among the four groups.

Results : In peripapillary region, intrachoroidal cavitation were found in 8 eyes (3.3%), retinoschisis was found in 58 eyes(23.9%), neurosensory retinal detachment was observed in 44 eyes (18.1%), optic pits was found in 5 eyes (2.1%), SAS was visible in 125 eyes (51.4%). There is statistically significant difference in age, axial length, refractive error, visual acuity, sub-foveal choroidal thickness, optic disc area and parapapillary atrophy area among the 4 groups.

Conclusions :
Myopic eyes with combined peripapillary macular abnormality are more common. Compared to myopic macular abnormalities, the peripapillary changes in myopic eyes occur in very early stage, which is often to be ignored.
