Abstract

Purpose : To compare optical quality in dry eye (DE) patients with normal subjects by OPD Scan-III (NIDEK, JPN) .

Methods : Thirty-six right eyes of 36 DE patients and 26 right eyes of normal subjects were included. The examinations for ocular surface and optical quality evaluated by OPD Scan-III were done for every subjects. Ocular surface parameters including the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), tear film breakup time (TBUT) and corneal fluorescein staining (CFS). OPD Scan-III was used to measure anterior corneal aberrations over 4 mm analytical zones including total aberrations, high-order aberrations (HOAs), standard deviation of corneal power (SDP), surface regularity index (SRI) and surface asymmetry index (SAI). Statistical analysis were assessed with paired sample t-test. Correlations between those parameters were also analyzed.

Results : Total aberrations and SDP were significantly increased in dry eye patients (p=0.006 and p=0.030). The correlation analysis showed that BUT correlated well with total aberrations (r=-0.630, p<0.001) and HOAs (r=-0.500, p<0.001). CFS correlated well with total aberrations (r=-0.630, p<0.001), HOAs (r=-0.500, p<0.001), SRI (r=-0.630, p<0.001) and SAI (r=-0.630, p<0.001).

Conclusions : OPD Scan III was used to evaluate optical quality by the cornea topography and wavefront aberrations. Both BUT and CFS correlated well with the optical quality parameters evaluated by OPD Scan III which could be a useful tool to evaluate dry eye.
