Abstract

Purpose : To evaluate choroidal thickness or choroidal structure of pregnant women from first trimester to third trimester using optical coherence tomography (OCT).

Methods : This prospective study included 28 eyes of 14 healthy pregnant women. Central choroidal thickness was measured using enhanced depth imaging OCT (EDI-OCT). The ratio of the luminal area to the stromal area was also assessed using binarization of the images obtained by EDI-OCT. The association of CCT with age, central retinal thickness (CRT), axial length (AL), or refractive error (RE) were analyzed.

Results : The mean CCT was 276±91μm, 304±98μm and 293±90μm at first, second and third trimester of pregnant women, respectively. The mean CCT significantly increased from first trimester to second and third trimester of pregnancy (P<.0001 and P<.0001). The mean ratio of choroidal luminal area was similar at first, second and third trimester of pregnant women (64.3±2.0%, 64.2±3.3% and 64.9±3.8%, respectively). In the multivariate analysis, there was no associating factors with CCT in each pregnant stage.

Conclusions : The CCT significantly increased from first trimester to second and third trimester of pregnancy. Multiple analysis found no factors associated with CCT.
