Abstract

Purpose : Electroretinogram (ERG) is increasingly used to monitor disease activity in Birdshot Chorioretinopahty (BCR). The purpose of this study was to evaluate possible correlation between visual field (VF) and ERG in BCR.

Methods : This retrospective study included 21 eyes of 11 patients with BCR. Isopters I4e and V4e of Goldmann perimeter, were used to assess possible association between kinetic VF and main full field ERG parameters. Generalized estimating equation (GEE) was used for statistical analysis to account for within-subject correlation between the right and left eye measurements. The final models were adjusted for age and gender.

Results : Goldmann VF showed a positive correlation between the size of the V4e isopter and the trough to peak amplitude of the photopic 30 Hz flicker response (p=0.0026), the b-wave amplitude of the scotopic dim response (p<0.0001), and the b-wave amplitude of the scotopic maximum response (p<0.0001). On the contrary, no significant correlation was found between the size of the I4e isopter and the amplitude of these ERG responses.
Comparing the VF with the ERG implicit times, only the V4e isopter showed a negative correlation with the implicit time of the photopic 30 Hz flicker response (p<0.0001). Neither the V4e nor the I4e isopters showed a significant correlation with the b-wave implicit time of the scotopic dim response or the scotopic maximum response.

Conclusions : There was a significant positive correlation between the size of the V4e isopter of Goldmann VF and the b-wave amplitude of scotopic ERG, as well as the amplitude of 30Hz flicker response in patients with BCR.
