Abstract

Purpose : to evaluate if MP-3 biofeedback rehabilitative strategy is useful to improve fixation BCEA in patients after RD surgery

Methods : 16 Eyes (patients age was 34-74 mean 59,5 DS 12,4 yrs) underwent to RD surgery (8 PPV and 8 SB) randomically chosen, underwent to Biofeedback rehabilitation with MP-3 Microperimetry for 10 weekly sessions for 20 minutes each after pupillary reflex recovery with custom strategy. BCEA was measured at 63 and 95 confidence interval at baseline, at 25 weeks after the end of biofeedback.
All patients were visited with BCVA, IOP, Fundus examination and MP3 Microperimery with fixation examination and retinal sensitivity Map, same examinations were performed at scheduled controls. statistical analysis was performed with SPSS program, paired Student t test was drawn.

Results : at the beginning of the biofeedback fixation BCEA in the operated patients was respectively for 63% and 95% tests 3,75 and 11,219 mm2, while after 25 weeks at the end of biofeedback was 2,312 and 6,944 mm2 respectively for 63&% and 93% BCEA. data were significative pvalue was 0,001, and 0,002 for BCEA 95%.
as described by different papers retinal detachment determines a mofìdifications of inner retina topography with reduction in retinal sensitivity and loss of fixation, usually after the surgery these alterations regress and patients have often a satisfactory visual recovery. in our study we demonstrate that MP3 biofeedback it is able to determine a better ricovery of visual performances as demonstrated in our previous report, reduced BCEA means that fixation is less instable and the patient reach a target lock-in more efficiently with less errors due to a incongruent reflex.

Conclusions : the study demonstrates that biofeedbak is an useful tool to perform retinal rehabilitation after retinal detachment surgery improving retinal performances, MP3 is a new device introduced recently in the market, it allows better definition of retinal images and a faster eyetracking sistem determining a more efficiet biofeedback session in each patient.
