Abstract

Purpose : To explore the value of using soft corneal contact lens (bandage contact lens) in vitreoretinal surgery.

Methods : This study was a randomized clinical trial. 60 eyes from 60 patients who needed vitreoretinal surgery in Affiliated Hospital of Yangzhou University were randomly divided into two groups, the experimental group and the control group, with 30 eyes in each group. The surgeries were operated by the same surgeon from August 2018 to August 2019. Bandage contact lens, of which the surface was moistened to avoid dryness, was used to cover the cornea in the surgeries in the experimental group. Balanced salt solution (BSS) was used to keep the cornea moist in the surgeries in the control group. The main index was the duration of the surgery and the frequency of BSS use during the surgery. The cornea was observed by slit lamp the day after the surgery, and examined and graded by fluorescence staining.

Results : Fluorescence staining grades showed that the cornea condition in the experimental group was distinctly better than that in the control group. The grades of the two groups had significant statistical difference

Conclusions : Bandage contact lens could be safely used in vitreoretinal surgery to effectively keep the cornea moist, optimize the progress of the surgery, and improvethe comfort of patients.
