Abstract

Purpose : We developed a simplified self-check screening sheet (CLOCK CHART® binocular edition: CCBE) and evaluated its clinical usefulness of assessing visual field (VF) abnormalities in daily life.

Methods : This research project enrolled 202 eyes of 101 glaucoma patients (mean age: 63.2 ± 12.9 years). The subjects were given both CCBE testing and static VF testing. HFA SITA-Standard 30-2 was used for testing static visual field. Binocular VF was formed using IVF (Integrated VF). In this case, when 2 or more contiguous test points less than 10 dB were detected within 30°, the subject was diagnosed with a VF defect. The stage of glaucoma was classified binocularly (using both eyes) by counting the number of response points that are 10 dB or higher of the 76 points in IVF (Disability Score: DS). The awareness of VF abnormalities in daily life and the sensitivity of CCBE were subsequently analysed.

Results : Of the 101 patients, thirty-five were aware of VF abnormalities in daily life(100%≤DS<80%: 18 cases, 80%≤DS<60%:11 cases, 60%≤DS<40%: 6 cases). The sensitivity of CCBE was 89%. Sixty-six patients were not aware of VF abnormalities in daily life(100%≤DS<80%: 63 cases, 80%≤DS<60%:2 cases, 60%≤DS<40%: 1 case). The sensitivity of CCBE was 75%.

Conclusions : CCBE is a method that helps to identify VF abnormality in patients who are not symptomatic in daily life. It is also useful as a self-monitoring tool for patients with diagnosed VF abnormalities.
