Abstract

Purpose : To evaluate the epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic approaches performed on patients with pterygium at HOFTALON, Londrina city, Paraná State, Brazil.

Methods : A retrospective study through medical records of patients attended at HOFTALON during July - November, 2019 was performed. Patients were evaluated according to age, gender, clinical presentation, pterygium features and treatment. The pterygia were classified at slit-lamp examination according to corneal extension in grade 1, 2, and 3. The data were submitted to statistical analysis.

Results : 555 eyes were evaluated. 55% were female and 45% male. 47% were 60 years or older. 92,5% presented pterygium at a nasal topography, and 5% had an association of nasal and temporal topography. 91% were primary and 9% were recurrent pterygium. Grade 1 was observed in 15,5%, grade 2 in 61,6% and grade 3 in 18,2%. Ocular irritation (89,2%) was the most prevalent complaint reported. A significant association regarding age and initial complaint was observed as ocular irritation was prevalent in all age groups evaluated (p=0,019). The correlation of laterality (right or left eye) and pterygium corneal extension was also statistically significant and demonstrated a higher prevalence of grade 2 in both eyes (p=0,049).

Conclusions : Eye irritation was the most reported complaint and primary grade 2 pterygia at nasal topography in adults older than 60 years were the most prevalent cases observed in this study
