Abstract
Purpose :
This study aims to demonstrate the demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with retinoblastoma who visited Seoul National University Children's Hospital, Seoul, the Republic of Korea from 1991 to 2020.
Methods :
Medical records of patients with retinoblastoma who visited Seoul National University Children's Hospital from 1991 to 2020 were reviewed. Age at diagnosis, sex, laterality, and tumor grading were recorded. During the study period, gross national incomes per capita were obtained from Statics Korea.
Results :
In total, there were 464 patients with retinoblastoma during the study period. Among them, 209 (45%) were female. The mean age of diagnosis was 21 months. In recent ten years, it was 19 months, which showed a significant decrease. During the study period, gross national incomes per capita were increased from 7,634 USD (the year 1991) to 31,634 USD (the year 2020).
Conclusions :
Seoul National University Children's Hospital is a representative tertiary center in the Republic of Korea. From 1991 to 2020, 464 patients with retinoblastoma visited the center. There was a dramatic increase in gross national incomes per capita during the study period, which reflected economic progress. This case series might be an excellent example for studying the effects of economic status and technical development on treatment patterns and outcomes in patients with retinoblastoma.
