Abstract

Purpose : Our purpose was to compare the obtained vault in eyes with and without cysts, in patients who were implanted by posterior chamber phakic intraocular lenses (PIOLs).

Methods : A single-center retrospective case series study was performed, including myopic patients who underwent surgery with posterior chamber PIOLs (IPCL; Care Group, India), between January and October 2021, at the Dr. Nano Eye Clinic (Olivos, Argentina). Postoperative vault was the main parameter to be evaluated. Preoperatively, the spherical equivalent (SE) was evaluated and the sulcus anatomy was assessed by biomicroscopic ultrasound. The eyes were divided into two groups, in relation to the presence or absence of cysts in the irido-ciliary sulcus. It was compared in how many eyes of each group the vault was outside an optimal range, defined between 250 and 750 microns (mcs). In addition, vault was statistically compared between groups by analysis of variance (ANOVA).

Results : A total of 86 eyes of 43 patients, aged 32.0 ±7.9 years old (21-54) were included. The mean preoperative SE value was -10.44 ±4.8 D (-2.5 to -27.5). Cysts were detected in 41 eyes (47.6%) of the total (86 eyes). In this group, 12 eyes (29.3 %) had a vault outside the optimal range (>750: 2 eyes; <250: 10 eyes). Of the 45 eyes without cysts, 13 (28.8 %) had an altered vault (>750: 4 eyes; <250: 9 eyes).
The mean vault value in the group of eyes with cysts was 390 ±190 mcs (110-810) and 430 ±210 mcs (120-980) in the groups of eyes with and without cysts respectively (p = 0.3).

Conclusions : In the present series, we did not find a statistically significant difference in the postoperative vault obtained in eyes, with or without cysts, implanted with IPCL PIOLs.
