Abstract
Purpose :
The amniotic membrane contact lens (AMCL) was created to treat conjunctival and corneal pathologies. With the increasing use of AMCLs, many companies have begun producing these lenses that now vary in size and composition. However, corneal abrasions are a noted potential complication with standard use of AMCLs. The purpose of this study is to compare the incidence of corneal abrasions between two different-sized lenses with standard use.
Methods :
We used retrospective data collection of AMCLs placed in a clinical setting during a six-month period. 643 total Regenerative Science AMCLs of the same composition were used (331 patients received 5-mm AMCLs and 312 patients received 8-mm AMCLs). The occurrence of all recorded corneal abrasions at the one-day post-op visit were measured. Exclusion criteria included patients who removed or tampered with the contact lens outside of the clinic.
Results :
The total incidence of corneal abrasions one-day post-placement was 19 out of 643 (0.030%). The 5-mm AMCL corneal abrasion incidence rate was 4 out of 331 (0.012%), and the 8-mm AMCL corneal abrasion incidence rate was 15 out of 312 (0.048%).
Conclusions :
This study observed that the incidence of corneal abrasions with the use of 8-mm AMCLs was four times the amount of the 5-mm AMCLs. With larger-sized AMCLs on the market, more studies are needed to determine the optimal size and composition of AMCLs to induce healing while limiting the occurrence of corneal abrasions.
