Abstract
Purpose :
To describe the Doppler ultrasound features of intraocular tumors (IOT).
Methods :
Retrospective, observational and comparative study performed at the Asociación Para Evitar la Ceguera en México. The study was approved by the Institutional Review Board and was adherent to the Declaration of Helsinki. All patients with diagnosis of IOT that had been analyzed with Doppler ultrasound were included. Qualitative features included: 1) grade of vascularity inside the tumor; 2) presence of dominant feeding vessel; 3) distribution of intra-tumoral vascularity. Quantitative features included: 1) resistance index; 2) peak systolic speed (PSS); 3) end diastolic speed. Chi-squared and Kruskal.Wallis tests were used to analyze qualitative and quantitative data, respectively. A P value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results :
Forty-six eyes of 41 patients were included. Eight different types of IOT are described. Four presented internal flow: melanoma (n=14), choroidal metastasis (n=7), choroidal hemangioma (n=7), and retinoblastoma (n=7). There was statistical difference for the 3 qualitative variables: dominant feeding vessel (p= 0.0001); distribution of vascularity (p= 0.0439); grade if vascularity (p< 0.0001). For quantitative variables, only PSS was significant (P= 0.028).
For IOT did not demonstrated internal flow: peripheral exudative hemorrhagic chorioretinopathy. (n=5), retinal vasoproliferative tumor (n=3), melanicitoma (n=2), and retinal capillary hemangioblastoma (n=1).
Conclusions :
Doppler ultrasound allows to visualize different features of IOT.
