Abstract

Purpose : To determine the relationship between ocular biometrics and acceleration of the axial elongation in children.

Methods : A prospective cohort study was performed in 75 right eyes of elementary school students for six years (8.5 to 14.5 years). All participants underwent optical axial length, anterior chamber depth and lens thickness measurement annually. The annual axial elongation was calculated in each year. Then, the acceleration of the axial elongation was quantified by the coefficient of the regression analysis. Spearman’s correlation was used to investigate the correlation between ocular biometrics at the first year and the acceleration of the axial length.

Results : The mean axial length at the first year was 23.37 ± 0.89 mm. The mean axial elongation for 6 years was 1.50 ± 0.49 mm and the mean acceleration of the axial elongation was -0.015 ± 0.048. Acceleration of the axial elongation was significantly correlated with first-year axial length (r = -0.40, p < 0.001), anterior chamber depth (r = 0.33, p = 0.007), and lens thickness (r = -0.42, p < 0.001).

Conclusions : Hyperopic ocular biometry at 1st year accelerate axial elongation in this period.
