Abstract

Presentation Description : High-throughput sequencing technologies have transformed clinical diagnostics and pathogen surveillance. This talk will focus on the use of metagenomic deep sequencing to surveil ocular infections globally. Specifically, findings from the SCORPIO (Seasonal Conjunctivitis Outbreak Reporting for Prevention and Improved Outcomes) study, an international collaborative study that uses RNA-seq to evaluate global patterns of infectious causes of conjunctivitis, will be discussed. The leveraging of genomic databases, existing bioinformatic pipelines, and international collaboration may provide the framework to reduce barriers for effective monitoring of outbreaks and to ameliorate public health threats.

This abstract was presented at the 2023 ARVO Annual Meeting, held in New Orleans, LA, April 23-27, 2023.
