Abstract
Purpose :
To compare the clinical characteristics of AACE between adolescents and adults.
Methods :
A prospective study was designed. One hundred and one patients diagnosed with AACE were included between March 2021 and September 2022. According to the age, the whole were divided into adolescents group (age<18years) and adult group (age≥18years). Refractive status, the angles of esotropia, diplopia and stereopsis were analyzed between two groups. SPSS 26.0 statistical software was used for data processing, and P < 0.05 was considered statistically different.
Results :
There were 59 patients in the adult group (31 males and 28 females; mean age 29.86 ± 9.64 years), and 42 patients in the adolescent group (29 males and 13 females; mean age 11.57 ± 3.98 years). The Chi-square test showed that the refractive state of different age groups was significantly different (χ2=17.649, p<0.001). Myopia was common in the adult group compared to the adolescents group. The angles of esotropia in the adolescent group were significantly larger than the adult group (p<0.001). There were no statistical difference between the two groups for sex (p=0.096), BCVA (right: p=0.853; left: p=0.206), and distance stereopsis (χ2=2.143, P=0.143) and near stereopsis (χ 2 = 0.671 P=0. 413).
Conclusions :
The clinical features of AACE were different between the adolescent and adult group. The adult group showed more myopia and smaller angles of esotropia compared to the adolescent.
