Abstract

Purpose : Cataract formation is common after scleral buckling surgery for retinal detachment repair. However, the complications of cataract surgery in these eyes have not been well studied. The purpose of this study is to investigate the postoperative complications of cataract surgery in eyes with a history of prior scleral buckling for retinal detachment.

Methods : This is a single-center, retrospective consecutive case series including eyes that havewith a history of scleral buckle surgery followed by subsequent cataract surgery between 2010 and 2022 at the Penn State Eye Center. Eyes with less than 3 weeks of follow-up, silicone oil at the time of biometry measurements, previous incisional cornea surgery, or co-existing ocular pathology that might impact the refractive outcome were excluded from the study. Complications occurring within 1 year following cataract surgery were extracted from the patient’s electronic medical record.

Results : There were 54 eyes from 54 patients eligible for inclusion in the analysis. The mean age at the time of scleral buckling was 55.1 ± 13.74 years (range 13 to 79). YAG capsulotomy for visually significant posterior capsular opacification (PCO) was performed in 29 (53.7%) eyes. The mean time to YAG following cataract surgery was 3.17 ± 3.65 months (range 0.33 to 11.37). Recurrent retinal detachment (RD) occurred in 2 (3.7%) eyes, with a mean time to onset of 0.315 + 0.0212 months following cataract surgery.

Conclusions : The incidence of PCO and recurrent retinal detachment after cataract surgery in eyes with prior scleral buckling may be higher than that observed in surgery naïve eyes.
