Abstract

Purpose : To investigate temporal trends in full-field electroretinogram (ffERG) parameters and analyze their associations with clinical aspects in patients with Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease (VKHD) followed up since disease acute onset.

Methods : Design: Retrospective interventional cohort study.
Methods: Setting: Single institution.
Participants: Twenty-two patients with acute VKHD disease, attended from June 2011 through January 2017, and followed up for at least 48 months, with systematic multimodal and ffERG evaluations.
Observation procedure: Dynamic changes of retinal function evaluated by ffERG at 1, 6, 12 and 48 months (M) after treatment with systemic corticosteroid associated or not with immunosuppressive therapy. Eyes were classified as normal and subnormal based on ffERG results at 48 months.
Outcome measures: Profile of ffERG parameters at four time points of follow-up in normal and subnormal groups and its association with clinical aspects.

Results : All parameters improved within 6 to 12 months (p<0.001) and then became stable (Figure). The values for most parameters differed between the two groups (p<0.01 to p<0.001), but with similar behaviour along the 48 months. Values at M1 differed from M6 and from M12 for all parameters (p<0.001). Sunset glow fundus at M12 was observed in 60.7% and 21.4% of eyes from subnormal and normal groups, respectively (p=0.025).

Conclusions : Our findings demonstrated that ffERG parameters improved within 6 to 12 months of follow-up and then became stable, even in patients with CS monotherapy. A more compromised ffERG at baseline and the presence of SGF at 12 month is associated with a subnormal ffERG at 48 month.
