Abstract

Presentation Description : This talk highlights the role of mononuclear phagocytes in different aspects of retinal degenerative and inflammatory diseases. We will first highlight the mechanisms how loss of retinal homeostasis evokes an unbalanced immune reaction involving responses of local microglia and recruited macrophages. We then summarize the scientific evidence for a critical role of microglia as therapy targets in the degenerating retina derived from cell culture studies and experimental animal research.

This abstract was presented at the 2024 ARVO Annual Meeting, held in Seattle, WA, May 5-9, 2024.
