Abstract
Purpose :
The purpose of this study was to characterize what factors are associated with secondary ocular surgeries following open globe injury (OGI).
Methods :
We performed a single-institution, retrospective study of patients who sustained OGI and underwent primary surgical repair at our institution between 2017 and 2023 with a follow-up time of at least 3 months. From this cohort we examined all patients who underwent a secondary ocular surgery within this timeframe and examined the surgical indication, specialty involved, type of ocular surgery, and visual outcome (in logMAR units) at final follow-up. Exclusion criteria included patients with partial thickness injuries, patients who did not meet the follow-up criteria, and those with a prior OGI to the same eye. This study was approved by the Rutgers University Institutional Review Board (IRB, Pro2019001861).
Results :
134 eyes from 134 patients were analyzed. Patients with OGI were on average 44 years of age (standard deviation 21 years), 77.6% male, of predominantly Caucasian (29.1%), Black (25.4%), or Hispanic (40.3%) descent. Of the 110 patients with who met the follow-up criteria, 67 (61%) required a secondary procedure. The median time at final follow-up was 6.5 months (interquartile range 5.2-13.4 months). When stratified by type of surgery, 39 underwent pars plana vitrectomy (35%), 17 needed secondary cataract surgery (15%), 18 (16%) required a procedure for intraocular hypertension, 6 (5.4%) underwent enucleation/evisceration, and 5 (4.5%) underwent secondary corneal procedures. LogMAR vision in patients who did not have secondary ocular procedure was mean 1.56 (20/600), while those who underwent secondary operation mean LogMAR was 1.65 (20/800-CF).
Conclusions :
In this single-institution retrospective study of 134 eyes, we provide descriptive characteristics and visual outcomes for patients undergoing secondary ocular procedures in the first 3-months following primary surgical repair for open globe injury.
