Abstract
Purpose :
Myopia is the most common refractive error in the world around 30% of the total population It is estimated that there will be 4.76 billion people with myopia globally by 2050, accounting for 50% of the total population. However, astigmatism should be also considered due to 40% of the population has astigmatism ≥ 0.75D.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the progression of myopia as assessed by change in axial length (AL) and spherical equivalent (SE) from baseline in Caucasian children wearing extended depth of focus soft toric contact lenses (CL) compared to single-vision toric distance spectacles.
Methods :
Longitudinal prospective non-randomized clinical trial.
21 children (8-12 years old) with SE ranging from -2.00D to -7.75D and astigmatism ranging from -0.75 to -2.75D were recruited. 11 were fitted with toric CL (MYLO, mark'ennovy, Spain); whereas the other 10 wore single-vision distance spectacles.
Cycloplegic refraction was measured with an auto-refractometer (Topcon TRK-2P, Japan) and AL with an IOLMaster-700 (Zeiss, Germany) at 3 months intervals. High contrast visual acuity (HCVA) and Contrast sensitivity (CS) were evaluated at baseline, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months.
Results :
After one year mean changed in SE/AL in the CL group was-0.18±0.20D/ 0.14±0.07mm and -0.53±0.08D/0.31±0.07mm (p<0.001) in the spectacle group.
Cumulative Absolute Reduction in axial elongation (CARE) was 0.18 ± 0.06mm. Average difference in SE change was -0.35 ± 0.13D.
While 89% of CL group had an AL increase <0.20mm, the spectacles group only obtained a 10% of representation in the category <0.20mm. 89% of the CL group and 0% in the spectacles group showed a progression in SE of -0.25D or less. The 100% of the spectacle group showed at least a SE -0.50D.
A statistically significant but not clinically significance of one letter HCVA reduction was found with CL compared to spectacles. No statistical significances were found in contrast sensitivity.
Conclusions :
Wearing extended depth-of-focus toric soft contact lenses for one year successfully slowed-down myopia progression compared to monofocal toric distance spectacles.
