Abstract
Purpose :
Previously, we reported that ganglion cell complex thickness in vertical B-scan images taken at the midpoint between the disc and fovea (strip GCCT) was useful to assess the papillomacular bundle (PMB) and was correlated with visual acuity (Takahashi N et al., Curr Eye Res 2020). In this study, we investigated the relationship between the central visual field and strip GCCT.
Methods :
We included 434 eyes of 434 patients (197 males, 237 females; age 62.8 ± 12.1 years; MD -14.6 ± 8.7 dB) with primary open-angle glaucoma who visited the Tohoku University Hospital Department of Ophthalmology from November 2015 to January 2023. We excluded cases with an axial length of less than 26.5 mm and those with low-quality optical coherence tomography (OCT) images (image quality ≤ 30). Using swept-source OCT (Triton, Topcon), we measured the thickness of the circumperipapillary retinal nerve fiber layer in the temporal quadrants (cpRNFLT), strip GCCT, and macular map GCCT (mGCCT). Additionally, as indicators of the central visual field, we measured average mean deviation (MD) with the Humphrey visual field analyzer 10-2 test and average total deviation (TD) of the central four points on the 24-2 test; we compared them using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient.
Results :
The correlation coefficient with MD on the 10-2 test was 0.71 for strip GCCT, 0.50 for cpRNFLT, and 0.72 for mGCCT. The correlation coefficient with the visual field of the central four points on the 24-2 test was 0.60 for strip GCCT, 0.47 for cpRNFLT, and 0.61 for mGCCT (all P < 0.0001).
Conclusions :
There was a high correlation between PMB thickness and the central visual field in patients with glaucoma. Strip GCCT, in particular, is visually easy to evaluate and showed a high correlation with the central visual field, suggesting its potential usefulness in assessing the central visual field in glaucoma patients.
