Abstract

Purpose : It is desirable that a wider range of refractive errors is acceptable for uncorrected visual acuity after implantation of intraocular lenses (IOLs). By utilizing a new aspheric profile, an enhanced IOL was developed to allow a wider tolerance of refractive error. In the prospective observational study, the tolerance as well as visual functions of eyes with the IOLs were evaluated.

Methods : In cataract surgery of 69 eyes from 39 patients (mean age: 71.1 ± 8.6 years), enhanced monofocal IOLs (NSP-3, Nidek) were implanted. Postoperatively, uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuities (UDVA and CDVA in logMAR, respectively) and manifest refraction spherical equivalent (MRSE) at 3 months, and photopic/mesopic contrast sensitivity (Optec 6500) at 1 month were examined. Previously reported results (Takada et al. Atarashii Ganka 2022) from 35 eyes with monofocal IOL SY60WF (Alcon) were used as controls. Changes in UDVA with MRSE were analyzed using segmented regression analysis.

Results : The means of UDVA, CDVA, and MRSE were 0.13 ± 0.23 logMAR, -0.10 ± 0.08 logMAR, and -0.39 ± 0.40 D, respectively, which were not different from eyes with control IOLs. The UDVAs decreased with the decrease of MRSE in eyes with control IOLs. In the eyes with NSP-3 IOLs, the UDVA changed minimally when MRSE was between 0 and -0.78 D. There was no significant difference in photopic/mesopic contrast sensitivity between eyes with either IOL.

Conclusions : Enhanced monofocal IOLs retained UDVA in the refractive error tolerance up to -0.78 D, while there was no significant degradation in postoperative visual function.
