Abstract
Presentation Description :
Children with amblyopia read 28% slower than their peers during silent binocular reading for comprehension, even though one eye has normal visual acuity. Here, I explore sensory factors related to slow reading in children with amblyopia, examine whether early literacy skills important for learning to read are impacted, and determine the role of ocular motor dysfunction, typical of amblyopia, in reading. Slow reading may hinder academic success and academic accommodations may be considered for children with amblyopia. The findings will add to the evidence that a whole-person approach to amblyopia treatment may be beneficial.
