Abstract
Purpose :
Binocular rivalry is the alternating perception that occurs when the two eyes are presented with incompatible stimuli. However, it is not clear whether the alternation of binocular rivalry can be objectively influenced. we recorded ocular dominance shifts induced by changes of vernier stimulus. We will report the features of ocular dominance shifts in binocular motion rivalry.
Methods :
Five subjects participated in the experiment. A pair of mirrors were used to obtain dichoptic viewing of horizontal movement different vertical offset which was displayed on 2 monitors. The velocity of the stimuli was 7.5 Degrees/second. The contrast ratio of vernier stimuli was: 99% .The horizontal movement different vertical offset of vernier pattern:1.75minutes of arc, 3.55minutes of arc, 5.33minutes of arc, and 7.11minutes of arc was used to induce optokinetic nystagmus (OKN). Subjects were instructed to stare at the centers of the monitor while they perceived alternating movement of the vernier stimulus. Motion evoked OKN were recorded using an eye movement recording system (FNND, USA). The OKN eye movements were analyzed and dominant time for each eye was calculated.
Results :
It was observed that the non-dominant eyes became dominant eyes when vertical offset of the vernier stimulus was increased from1.75minutes of arc to 7.11minutes of arc. The dominant time of non-dominant eye increased from 18.47% to 81.53% on average in all subjects. The OKN mean velocity of the non-dominant eyes increased from 3.89°/s to 5.12°/s when the Non-dominant eyes became dominant.
Conclusions :
Ocular dominance of the binocular rivalry can by modulated by the inputs of the motion stimulus. In our case it is the vertical offsets of vernier stimulus. Then, our finding may help with visual mechanism investigation of binocular rivalry in animal or preverbal children.
