Abstract
Purpose :
To investigate the frequency of newly arrived patients with uveitis between 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2022 at Saitama Medical Center, Jichi Medical University, Saitama, Japan.
Methods :
We retrospectively surveyed the records of patients with uveitis who first visited Jichi Medical University Saitama Medical Center between 1 January 2020 and 31 December 2022. Clinical data obtained included age, gender, diagnosis, anatomic location of inflammation (anterior, intermediate, posterior, pan), laboratory test results of blood and aqueous humor.
Results :
Totally, 490 uveitis patients (228 males and 262 females) visited our hospital during the 3 years. The mean age at initial examination was 56.0±20.5 years (53.9 years for males and 57.8 years for females). Binocular uveitis was found in 296 patients (60.3%), and monocular uveitis in 194 patients (39.7%). In terms of anatomical sites, the most common was panuveitis (54.2%), followed by anterior uveitis (35.7%), posterior uveitis (9.6%), and intermediate uveitis (0.4%). Definite diagnoses were made and could be classified with a specific uveitis entity in 301 cases (61.4%) , and 189 cases (38.6%) were judged as unclassified uveitis. Among the classified cases, the most common diagnoses were sarcoidosis (9.6%), followed by Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease (8.8%), herpetic iritis (6.3%, of these, 9 cases of herpes simplex virus, 10 cases of varicella zoster virus, 11 cases of cytomegalovirus, 1 case of HHV7), intraocular lymphoma (3.9%), and Behcet’s disease (3.7%). Among the unclassified cases, the most common suspected diagnosis was sarcoidosis-suspected (21.5%). The mean age was 56.0 years, with 53.9 years for males and 57.8 years for females. The age distribution showed a peak in the 50s for males and in the 70s for females. Sarcoidosis was more common in women and herpetic iritis in men. Compared to the nationwide survey (2016) in Japan, this study showed higher frequency of intraocular lymphoma and cytomegalovirus retinitis and lower frequency of acute anterior uveitis and acute retinal necrosis.
Conclusions :
The current study confirmed the recent increasing trends of herpes virus/cytomegalovirus associated uveitis and intraocular lymphoma in Japan.
