Abstract
Presentation Description :
Soft contact lens materials have been available since the early 1970’s. Over the ensuing 50 years practitioners have seen the commercialisation of a wide variety of materials and the introduction of frequent replacement lenses, with the latest developments seeing significant growth in the fitting of both silicone hydrogels and daily disposables. Despite that, some 50% of wearers still complain of end of day dryness and discomfort. This presentation will review the attempts that companies have made to enhance contact lens success through the introduction of novel materials, fabrication methods and also examine the challenges brought through these advancements with respect to recycling and sustainability.
