Abstract
Purpose :
The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between metamorphopsia and optical coherence tomography (OCT) parameters, including the ectopic inner foveal layer (EIFL), in patients with idiopathic epiretinal membrane (ERM) who underwent vitrectomy.
Methods :
The study included 24 cases (26 eyes) who underwent vitrectomy for ERM at the ophthalmology department over the past 2 years. Metamorphopsia scores in the vertical (metamorphopsia score of vertical line: MV) and horizontal (metamorphopsia score of horizontal line: MH) directions were measured using M-CHARTS. EIFL was measured by OCT in the vertical and horizontal directions through the fovea, and vertical EIFL (VE) and horizontal EIFL (HE) were quantified using Image J analysis software. Visual acuity, central retinal thickness (CRT), and EIFL were measured preoperatively and at 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively, and the relationships among these parameters were analyzed using multiple regression analysis.
Results :
Visual acuity and metamorphopsia improved at 6 months postoperatively (p<0.05). Preoperative CRT correlated with preoperative MV (p<0.01) and pre- and postoperative MH (p<0.05). Preoperative VE was identified as a factor correlated with MV and MH at 6 months postoperatively (p<0.05), and preoperative HE was correlated with MH at 3 months postoperatively and MV at 6 months postoperatively (p<0.05).
Conclusions :
Preoperative vertical and horizontal EIFL in ERM patients could be predictive factors for postoperative metamorphopsia.
