Abstract

Purpose : To investigate the gender differences on risks of ptosis in patients receiving pars plana vitrectomy

Methods : This prospective study included 84 aged >50 years patients receiving pars plana vitrectomy. between 2017 and 2023 in Wan Fang Hospital and Shuang Ho hospital. Marginal reflex distance and levator muscle function are recorded before surgeries, and follow-up visits at 1week, and 1 month. The patients' eyelids were photographed before surgery and follow-up visits at 1 week and 1 month. Operative parameters associated with lid parameter changes were analyzed.

Results : 84 patients with a mean age of 58.6 year are included. The median number of surgeries in treated eyes was 1.2(range 1-4). There are lower risks of ptosis in men than in women ( P = 0.04), particularly in patients > 75 years (P=0.03). In subgroup analysis, the gender differences on risks of ptosis are not significant in patients with triamcinolone usage, and previous cataract surgeries (P=0.64, and 0.57, respectively).

Conclusions : The risk of ptosis is high in women receiving vitreoretinal surgeries, particularly in patients > 75 years. Further studies are needed to identify the risk factors of ptosis in those patients.
