Abstract

Presentation Description : Mitochondrial (Mt) damage precedes histopathological abnormalities in many retinal diseases, including diabetic retinopathy (DR). Recent studies demonstrate that exogenous Mt can incorporate into cellular mitochondrial network and normalize bioenergetics of damaged donor retinal cells through Mt transfer mechanism. This presentation will focus on the role of Mt transfer in normalization of bioenergetics of retinal cells under pathogenic conditions. Mt transfer is a potential paracrine mechanism for reparative function of bone marrow derived progenitor cells that rescues retinal cells from bioenergetic abnormalities and cells will be discussed.

This abstract was presented at the 2024 ARVO Annual Meeting, held in Seattle, WA, May 5-9, 2024.
