Abstract

Presentation Description : Biomarkers provide the promise of more precise diagnosis and determination of response to treatment. However, markers need to be validated and therefore standard operating procedures (SOPs) need to be created. Tears offer a minimally invasive sample, but also come with challenges given the small volume per sample and therefore replicate readings are not typically possible and tears car vary between basal and reflex tearing and how the sample is collected and processed. Standardization is needed so results can be replicated in other laboratories and results can be compared among testing sites and subject groups. . Challenges of tear analysis will be reviewed and some current approaches to standardize procedures will be discussed.
